It is my pleasure to address this gathering of distinguished scholars and delegates of the Fifth International Symposium on the History of Mathematics and Mathematical Education Using Chinese Characters. This is an optimum time for such a cross Asian-culture study as the word community began to develop a better appreciation of the interwoven relationships between the East and the West. In recent decades, the history-of –science community has come along way in appreciating cross-cultural studies by awarding the Sarton Medal, the highest horror in history of science, to Joseph Needham and to Kiyoshi Yabuuti for their research on early Chinese works and Japanese works in science and technology.
