International relay swimMING across the Bering Strait
(Russia – USA)
PROJECT PLAN of the International Relay Swimming across the Bering Strait “TO MEET THE SUN”, devoted to the 270th anniversary of the expedition of Vitus Bering, the pioneer of Alaska, to the 365th anniversary of Semyon Dezhnev’s expedition, to the 50th anniversary of the heroic feat of the submariners of “K-19”, in the memory of the Prelate Innocent, the Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, the Apostle of Siberia and Alaska, who made a spiritual path from Russia to America The objectives of the event: -
to connect the two continents by the International Relay Swimming under the extreme conditions; -
to glorify the deeds of the pioneers of the Russian America; -
to consolidate the friendship between the sportsmen of different countries; -
to set a new world record and achieve the world appreciation; -
to open a new page in the history of development of sport in the Far East and the North America; -
to conduct a scientific research aimed at examining a human who has spent a long time in the ice water, and developing techniques of saving people exposed to undercooling on the basis of the research; -
to attract public attention to acknowledgement of the sport winter swimming as a new kind of sports and conducting this during the coming Winter Olympic Games in 2014 in Sochi. The Organization Committee of the relay swimming: - The Committee of National and Non-Olympic Sports (CNNS) of Russia;
- The Amur regional Public Organisation “Aquaice-sport Federation”;
- American-Russian Sport Association “Harmony” (Washington, DC, USA)
- The Department of Physical Culture, Tourism and Sport of the Chukchi Autonomous Area
- The National Association of Reserve Officers Associations of Russia “Megapir” in the Far Eastern Federal District.
Funds and Financing of the event: The relay swimming is organized on the off-budget funds of the Khabarovsk Territory, the Amur region, the Kamchatka region, Chukchi Autonomous Area, investors from The USA, and the charity funds and organizations from both Russia and the USA. The Escort of the Sportsmen. The Fleet of the Far Eastern Military District, the Fleet of the Frontier Administration of the Chukchi Autonomous Area of the Federal Security Bureau of Russia. The Sportsmen’s Safety maintenance: The Far East Regional Centre of Search and Rescue Service of the EMERCOM of Russia, catastrophe medicine brigade. Organizers of the relay swimming: - The Amur regional Public Organisation “Aquaice-sport Federation”;
- American-Russian Sport Association “Harmony” (Washington, DC, USA)
- The National Association of Reserve Officers Associations of Russia “Megapir” in the Far Eastern Federal District.
Planned Support: The International Relay Swimming across the Bering Strait (from the Dezhnev Cape, the Chukchi Peninsula, Russia to Cape Prince of Wales, Alaska, the USA) will be performed with the support of the Governments of the Amur Region, the Khabarovsk territory, the Kamchatka region, the Primorsky territory, the Governor of Anchorage, USA, the Ninistry for Foreign Affairs of Russia, the Russian
consulate in the USA, the Frontier Administration of the FSB of Russia in the Kamchatka region and in the Chukchi autonomous area, the political party “Yedinaya Rossia”, the editorial board of “Pari” agency (Russia Book of Records). The Participants: The strongest long distance ice water swimmers from Great Britain, the USA, China, Dominican Republic, Czech Republic, Latvia and Russia are going to participate in the relay swimming. The total amount of the swimmers will be 30 people. The sportsmen who are going to participate should meet the following requirements: - The experience of conditioning to the cold must be more than 5 years.
- There should be some personal achievements.
- The swimmer must be able to swim more than 800 m in ice water.
- The speed must be about 2.5-3 kmph
- Strong psychological stability to swim 3 or 4 distances a day for 15 or 20 min each.
- The participants must obtain the permission from a doctor in sports medicine.
The Time Schedule and the Route of the event: The International Relay Swimming across the Bering Strait is going to take place from 17 July to 10 August, 2011. The event will include: - An exhibition swim in Anadyr as a part of a local holyday “Berengia”. (23-24 July, 2011)
- An exhibition swim for the frontier guards in the Providence Bay, the Chukchi Autonomous Area (26-27 July 2011)
- Start of the International Relay Swimming (the Dezhnev Cape, the Chukchi Peninsula, Russia – Ratmanov Island - island of Little Diomede - Cape Prince of Wales, Alaska, the USA). The day of the start will be chosen on-site depending on the weather conditions between 28 to 30 July, 2011. The relay will be performed non-stop over a two-day period. There won’t be any stops for the night.
- Finish in the Alaska water area (Cape Prince of Wales, Alaska, the town of Nome)
- Press-conference in Anchorage and Seattle, USA.
- The excursion tour suggested by the American-Russian Sport Association “Harmony”.
Conditions of the swim: - The swim will be performed as a relay, each sportsman will swim 3 or 4 times a day (1 day = 24 hours), each lap 15-20 minutes long.
- Water temperature will be about +4 to +8°C.
- Air temperature will be about +10 to +15°C.
The participants’ expenses: The participants will have to bear the following expenses (either on their own or with the help of some sponsoring organization): - The travel to the assembly point in Anadyr, Russia.
- The obtaining the guest visa to the USA.
- The air ticket from Anchorage to Seattle, USA.
- The air ticket from Seattle to the home country.
- Participation fee of 700 USD.
Notes: - The logos of the participants’ sponsoring organizations can be placed on the website of the event.
- There may be some changes in the plan due to the circumstances.
- The sportsmen must confirm their participation by 25 April, 2011.
